connecting you with your body
I admit it: I hate gyms, and detest working out inside a room full of stale air where 20 TVs are blaring over the sound of exercise equipment.  I was, however, searching for an exercise program that would be comprehensive, challenging, and fun enough to keep me involved.  I have found that program via pilates classes from Joanna.  I have been taking pilates classes from Joanna since 2006, when I first discovered her teaching at the Centennial apartments.  I now take a mat class as well as classes on the Reformer from her at Studio Evolve.

Joanna excels at recognizing body "idiosyncracies" and working with you to tone and strengthen the specific area, along with your entire body.  She also is attuned to body aches and pains being symptoms of greater problems, such as whole-body misalignment (in my case, what I thought were simply loose tendons around my knees extended from pronated feet to tight ilitotibial (IT) bands along my outer thighs).   She maintains a holistic view of my exercise regimen, offering beneficial suggestions on everything from bike fit (I am an avid casual biker) to proper footwear and even suggesting exercises and stretches I can do at home or while at the office.

I would highly recommend Joanna's enthusiastic and positive approach to pilates to anyone who seeks a great workout that builds muscle and flexibility in a light, fun environment!

I’ve been working with Joanna for a couple years or more, including twice-weekly mat classes offered in my apartment building, and recently at Studio Evolve, where we have an additional weekly session on the Reformer. It isn’t easy for me to be consistent with exercise, but Joanna has a way of making hard work enjoyable. Her routines are varied, with instruction and constructive feedback delivered in a positive manner. Her observations are made with a view toward improvement and greater challenge, and through the years we’ve shared some good laughs as my now 50+ year-old body (and mind) tries to remember:  abs go in, shoulders go back, ribs stay down (my nemesis), and don’t forget to breathe. Yes, Joanna wants you to do it all – simultaneously! And Joanna’s introduction to the Reformer has me hooked. She has gradually increased the level of difficulty, and we continue to have lighthearted moments as my flexibility and strength are tested in new ways.

Moreover, Joanna’s technical competency has been a great asset in my treatment and recovery from work-related repetitive stress injuries. Joanna often makes suggestions for modifying an exercise, but she has been especially attentive to my injuries, with diligent reminders of modifications and alternatives to prevent overuse or added strain. She also introduced me to Yamuna Body Rolling, focusing on the muscle groups that are problematic. With Joanna’s guidance, I can make the necessary lifestyle changes that will prevent future problems.

I truly enjoy Pilates and Joanna, and am now reaping the benefits of my own persistence – under Joanna’s watchful and trained eye – in my posture, stamina, and muscle tone. Even the physical therapist commented on my strength. So if you are serious enough to work hard, but can laugh and enjoy the journey, Pilates with Joanna may be just for you!
